Culture from Agriculture

 Subscribe in ader

Do you know where this word culture comes from? One boy responded, it came from the mountain! Really! Mountain? One anthropologist said, that the word culture derived from the word agriculture. Hey hey! Correct! You taker of a plants in a certain conditions to the other. A plant from the plot to the pot. You cultured it .It transformed from nature to human resource.

Culture involves people, in different places with different lifestyle, beliefs, ideas , values and practices.
Is there superior and inferior cultures? None! Cultures emerged from the experiences of people in particular place and time. There is no point also of comparison, but there is call to respect each others culture.

2014 CatecheticalCongress WEBBANNER

This is the  logo of the 24th Catechetical Congress and Seminar Workshop organized by the Communication Foundation for Asia . And this year's congress focuses on the New Evangelization.  What is new? The message remains the same : THE PROCLAMATION OF THE PERSON JESUS CHRIST. But the culture of the people 30 years ago may be different from our present generation. And to be with this young generation is quite challenging especially  in bringing the message of salvation to them. There is call to understand their culture and at same discover a new way, and  new methods  of introducing Jesus that would be fitting to them.

I am so blessed together with our school chaplain Fr. Rolando Mandreza and Richard Escobido, we are all from the Holy Cross of Davao College attended this Seminar Workshop.

We have good pool of speakers,  Sr. Gemma Victorino, PDDM, PhD who discussed about biblical grounding. Fr. Ben Alforque, MSC the Director of CRC,  Dean Rolando Tolentino of the University of the Philippines and Estella Garcia who is a pioneered BEC organizer.

Faculty C Recollection Prayer

 Subscribe in a reader

The following is intended prayers for college faculty set c who will be at Eden Nature's Park for a day         of recollection

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Prepare our hearts, we pray, O Lord our God,
by your divine power,
so that at the coming of Christ your Son
we may be found worthy of the banquet of eternal life
and merit to receive heavenly nourishment from his hands.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Reading:

 Meditation:
We reflect today on a promise of a day full of hope
of plenty, of peace. We ask for the grace to be open,
to respond to whatever the Lord is offering us in these precious days
of preparation and anticipation.
No matter how difficult our situation, we can trust in the Lord;
we can eat and be satisfied.
I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.
On that day it will be said:
“Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us!
This is the LORD for whom we looked;
let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!”

Intercessions:
The Word of  God humbled himself to dwell with us so
that we might see his glory.  Rejoicing in hope, let us call
upon him:
Emmanuel, be with us.

Ruler, just and righteous,
- bring justice to the poor and the oppressed.

King of peace, you beat swords into plowshares and spears
    into pruning hooks,
- turn hatred into love and our grievances into forgiveness.

You do not judge by appearances,
- recognize those who are your own.

When you come with power and might upon the clouds,
- grant that we may come before you without shame.
 Lord's Prayer
Closing Prayer:
Lord of all,
you are a God of plenty, a Lord who provides
for us in our need.
As I begin these early days of Advent
help me to believe that you know what I need.
Give me the courage to listen to your voice
and the freedom
to open my heart to the graces you are
offering me to place my trust in you.

 May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Years ago, I was contemplating of my coming years where in I have to stop working 8 hours a day. What would be my possible flow  of life on my retirement days?  Lot of possible scenario came to my mind. What would be my other sustenance aside from pension? I have to look for another alternative. Farming, vermi culture, and making a boarding house are the options. I started gradually, and in period of one year construction ,  a room with  a comfort room was built.  I am so happy and grateful to God for this material blessing. My  is exciting moments for me. Though I may no longer receiving every 15th and 30th income but I believe the Lord God will in place me as He will continue to provide. One is so clear to me that I will still continue to my mission of sharing the mission of Jesus Christ.

Working in an institution or company may end but our work for the vineyard of the Lord must continue through our service and involvement in our Christian community.  Our mission must go on!

Are there challenges in our retirement days?  The following are possible challenges;
  • Keep one's mind heart focus to God's eternal promise
  • Keep one's body strong and healthy through exercise and eating vegetables and fruits
  • Attend community and church activities
  • Get in touch with good friends with similar aspirations and values
  • Observe moments of prayer
  • Trust God's always loving presence
Retirement is a call to trust and a call to live a meaningful life.

The Benefits of Turmeric

 Subscribe in a reader

Since my younger days, I have the passion of  gardening. Now that I am running towards 60"s the passion is still there. An old  herb caught my attention which many doctors and scientist focus their eyes in it. The wonder of TURMERIC( Curcuma longa ) . a spice at same time now is a potential  cure of different kinds of infections and cancer. It has been used to treat different kinds of illnesses.

Year 2002, I visited my sister in Sacramento. With my love of gardening, I used my free early morning time for gardening in her backyard. I was incidentally stepped into a sharp object. And good that I brought powder of turmeric from the Philippines. I put the wounded part of my feet with the turmeric powder. Amazingly in three days it was healed. I did not suffer of that wound.

Now it is found out that Turmeric has many  Health  Benefits

1.  Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for
     depression.
2.  It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in
disinfecting cuts and burns.  (This was my experienced of the
     healing power of turmeric ).
3  Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs.
4.  May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.
5.  May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.
6.  May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by
removing amylase plaque buildup in  the   brain.
 7. Is a natural liver detoxifier.
8.  May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory
     skin conditions.
9.  Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural
treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
10. It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as
anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.

Today turmeric is   taken in powder or pill available in health
     stores  in  capsules .

My parents started using turmeric during World War II. Turmeric is our basic medicine in the family. My mother dried turmeric roots for emergency needs for what ever sickness would come to us.
Since then, we don't run out of planting turmeric and this time I even increase in volume.
